Explain an AI concept in English: definition, mechanism, conditions

Start with the listener’s question

Decide what someone needs to understand: the problem, the mechanism or a decision. Check conceptual accuracy separately from natural English. A confident explanation can still describe the wrong process.

Write a bounded definition

Teaching example: RAG retrieves relevant information and adds it to the context used to generate an answer. This links retrieval to generation without promising that every answer will be true. Check the definition against a course source, then add your own work example.

Explain the mechanism without notes

Write retrieve → add context → generate. Name the input and output of each step. If you remember the acronym but cannot explain how retrieved material affects the answer, return to that specific part of the reading.

Change the audience

For a project manager: Our handbook changes often, so we can retrieve relevant sections when answering a question. For a colleague designing an evaluation: Did we retrieve the right section, and does the answer stay within it? These are different communication goals.

Keep the limitations

Having a source does not guarantee correctness. Retrieval can miss important material, and generation can misinterpret it. An accurate explanation keeps these conditions even when you shorten the wording.
